Sahara 2010 | Day by Day Itinerary (As Listed on Macmillan Website)

Day 1

Fly from London Heathrow to Ouarzazate. We stay over night in a local hotel.

Day 2 Ouarzazate-Erg Lihoudi

After briefing about the challenge that lies ahead, we drive to Oulad Driss, our starting point. Trekking begins after lunch in the late afternoon. We cross flat open plains followed by small sand dunes where we camp under the stars.

Walking time approximately three hours.

Day 3 Erg Lihoudi-Oued L'autruche

After an early start we walk through the small dunes of Erg Lihoudi.   There are views of the Jebel Bani Mountains to the north and gently undulating dunes to the south.  By mid afternoon we reach a flat rocky plateau, where we set up camp for the night.

Walking time approximately seven hours.

Day 4 Oued L'autruche-Bougarnne

Today we alternate between walking on soft sand and stony ground littered with the fossilised remains of sea creatures. Heading across low dunes our feet sink lower as the dunes become larger. Eventually we climb a small bluff and camp overlooking the dunes.

Walking time approximately seven hours.

Day 5 Bougarnne-Erg Chegaga

We head off down a gully onto the desert floor before facing several short climbs. The afternoon reveals magnificent views of the largest sand dunes of the region. We camp at the foot of these dunes, under the stars.

Walking time approximately seven hours.

Day 6 Erg Chegaga-Jebel Bani

We start the day with a spectacular climb to the top of a 120m dune and are rewarded with breathtaking views at the top. Having descended the other side, we spend the remainder of the day amongst the dunes passing the occasional nomadic encampment. Again we camp in the open air.

Walking time approximately eight hours.

Day 7 Jebel Bani-Iriki Pan

Today we see mirages across the flat salt pans of Iriki. This spectacular environment is vast and shimmering in the heat.  Our final camp is on the edge of the salt pan and the sunset that awaits us is the perfect finale for our final night under the stars.

Walking time approximately seven hours.

Day 8 Iriki Pan-Ouarzazate

At sunrise the next morning we embark on the last part of the journey in open trucks.  This is great fun if not a little dusty!  We are then transferred to Ouarzazate, where an afternoon of well deserved relaxation and a celebration meal await us.

Day 9

Transfer to Ouarzazate airport and fly back to London.
